Mountain Biking in Nepal

Mountain Biking is possible all year round in Nepal, though you need to be aware of the seasons.

Monsoon - Mid June to late September. Expect lots of rain and very humid and hot riding conditions with limited to no views of the Himalaya.

Winter - October to the end of January. Peak tourist seasons falls in these months. the weather will progressively get colder and colder. But it remains dry for the most part and sunny, clear days with light afternoon winds make for ideal riding conditions. The big bonus at this time of year is that you are almost always guaranteed mountain views and all tracks and trails will be more accessible once the monsoon has left. The daylight also lessens as winter progresses limiting the distance you can cover in a day.

Spring/Summer - February to May. A beautiful time of year in Nepal for greenery and wildflowers. The weather gets progressively hotter by May, before the monsoon can make riding tough and a very sweaty affair! The hot sun can be very intense around midday.

Annapurna

One itinerary

The itinerary below takes you up to area north of Pokhara and the Annapurna Himal and is just one of a number of itineraries I can help you with. Kathmandu to Pokhara is also an excellent low level itinerary.

Day 1: Pokhara to Mukthinath - 3800 metres
It’s about a 22 minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Depending on your fitness, we can then cycle on upwards to Mukthinath. It’s quite a climb, but we should have a bit of a tail wind going up the valley. The ride takes four to five hours.

Day 2: Ranipauwa round trip – 3700 metres
We cycle up to Ranipauwa up in the hills below Thronga La (Pass). It’s a beautiful 3 to 4 hour trip with loads of single tracks and some amazing downhill sections. We then spend some time sightseeing and exploring Mukthinath and its temples on foot.

Day 3: Mukthinath to Kalopani – 2530 metres
Our day kicks off with some brilliant downhill. We have to start early as the wind gets up after 11am making riding a bit more challenging. Take lunch in the beautiful and ancient town of Marpha famous for growing apples and making apple brandy!

Day 4: Kalopani to Tatopani – 1190 metres
Again we are going downhill today. Stop at the lush waterfalls at Ruksa Chaahara for lunch. Once in Tatapani you can enjoy a soothing bath in the hot springs.

Day 5: Tatopani to Maldunsha to Pokhara – 920 metres
A ride of around 45 km on open jeep track, flat for the most part but a few up and down hills. From Maldundha we transfer by jeep back to Pokhara for a well earned rest.
