We had a choice at the end of the course – walk out or fly out. Flying out was the easy option but also the expensive one so we decided to walk out. However Sam wasn’t so keen. He had walked out on many occasions and tried to convince us that we should fly out. He explained that it was a hard slog of perhaps twenty hours with heavy packs, it would be hot and tiring, walking on glacial moraine can be ankle breaking work, our time could be better spent doing more ice work and he didn’t really want to walk out anyway. Somehow he was very convincing and so we called in the ‘chopper’. Twenty minutes later we were off the glacier and sitting in front of the fire at the Hermitage Hotel – quite a change from hanging in a crevasse.
